Welcome to Abbott's TaeKwonDo America!

We'd like to welcome you to Abbott's TaeKwonDo America!

As a student at Abbott's Taekwondo America (Abbott's), you are also a member of Taekwondo America (TA). At Abbott's, we strive to provide a professional environment, where students and their families feel welcome. So although you may be the only one taking class as a student, you and your family are all considered members of Abbott's. As members, you are all subject to the rules and regulations while in the school, or at any Abbott's/TA event. Many aspects of a quality martial arts program can only be learned in time, and we understand that this will be a learning process for both you and your family. The letter to the right will help answer some of your questions. Please don't hesitate to ask about things not covered or any other concerns that may arise.

  • Blacksburg Testing Schedule

    This Saturday the 4th of February in BLACKSBURG we will NOT BE HAVING A NORMAL CLASS SCHEDULE!!! Instead we will be having Testing Prep Classes.

    9am White - Sr. Blue Juniors
    10am Brown - Black Juniors
    11am White - Sr. Blue Adults
    12pm Brown - Black Adults

    Please make sure you bring all your gear. This will be a very good practice before your testing, lots of one on one attention from the instructors. Please take advantage of this. Hope to see all you guys this Saturday.


    The Blacksburg February Testing Times will be as follows:

    Monday Feb. 6th 6:00pm - Family Testing. This testing day is for Family Membership persons and our Little Dragons. No Classes.

    Wednesday Feb. 8th 6:00pm - All White Through Sr. Blue Juniors. No Classes

    Signing up is easy. At the front counter we have the testing sign up sheets that you fill out completely and leave for us in the bin located on the same counter. You can also download this sign up sheet from Kicksite. All students must be signed up and have paid for testing by Friday the 3rd of February.

  • Holiday Sale!

    Our Holiday Sale is tomorrow, December 3rd! We have really cool Special Order items we only get at this time of year as well as some discounts on some favorites.

    The times for the sales in Roanoke from 12:00pm to 2pm and in Blacksburg from 10:00am to 12:00pm.

    You can download the pdf file of the order forms with the available items below (and on Kicksite under the Library button in Documents). Fill it out and drop it off with us at the school if Saturday won’t work for you. Please make sure your name is written clearly on the order form as well as a preferred payment method. The orders will be submitted on Monday and we have been promised delivery by the 20th of December.

  • Black Friday Lock-In

    We are having a Lock-In for Black Friday. The Lock-In starts on Thanksgiving Day at 8PM (Thursday, Nov. 24) and goes until Noon (12PM) on Black Friday (Nov. 25). Get to all the Black Friday Sales early and let us watch your kids. This is open to all of our students AND their friends. The cost is $25 per child.

  • October 2011 Awards Ceremony

    We will be having a our October Awards Ceremony on Wednesday Oct. 12th from 6PM - 8PM at The Skate Center in Roanoke. If you wish to skate, there is a rental fee of $2.00 and also a fee of $2.00 for the Play Zone. They have a snack bar where you can get pizza by the slice or other snacks. Please DO NOT wear your TKD Uniform, since we will be skating, this is a "Plain Clothes" event. We will not have any classes for either school that day.

    In an effort to make getting information about and signing up for testing easier, we would like students to go to Kicksite and log in to their account to pre-register for testing (even if you have already talked to one of us at the school and paid for testing we still need you to go through this process.)
    There is also a form in our “Library” to fill out and drop off at the school for your testing. Its really easy and it also gives us a second way of verifying those who are testing.

    This weekend is the National Tournament in Winston-Salem NC. The TKD Schools will be closed Friday the 16th and Saturday the 17th.

    It is NOT TOO LATE to sign up to go compete. Please see an instructor about getting signed up today!! Our students are still able to find hotel rooms as of today and its only 2 hours from here.

  • MUST READ - National Tournament Location Clarification - MUST READ!

    1. The National tournament and National testing will both take place at the Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem. The registration form incorrectly says all events will occur at the Marriott hotel. The Benton Convention Center is very close to the Marriott. Their address is: 301 West 5th Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101.

    2. The sparring team competition will take place Friday night, all competitors should be ready to compete by 7:30 p.m.

  • Roanoke Lock-In

    We are having a Lock-In in Roanoke on Saturday August 27th at 6pm until Sunday August 28th at 9am. The cost is $25 for overnight or $15 if they are picked up by 10pm Saturday night.

  • September National Tournament

    Our September National Tournament will be September 16th and 17th - Get Signed Up!

    The National Tournament is a big deal. It's where the entire organization tries to come together in the spirit of competition and has a terrific time. This one is in our backyard: Winston-Salem, NC. This tournament will be special also because several of our own will be testing for ADVANCED RANK within TKD America on that Friday at 3:30 pm. If you can be there to support them it would be great!

    Also, we are trying to set a Taekwondo America Record at the September National!! 1,000 Competitors has NEVER been done. There will be a Massive Trophy Presented to the Abbott's School that has the most Competitors

  • Blacksburg and Roanoke Award Ceremonies/Pot Luck/Cook Outs

    The Award ceremony in Roanoke is set for Thursday the 11th at Garst Mill Park at 6pm.
    The Award ceremony in Blacksburg will be Friday the 12th at Hand in Hand park at 6pm.

    These are plain clothes events and everyone needs to sign up to bring a dish/dessert/whatever. Please stay tuned to the website all week to see if we need to change locations due to weather. Should it rain we will move the ceremony to your respective school.

    There will be NO CLASSES in Roanoke on Thursday the 11th and NO CLASSES in Blacksburg on the 12th.

    This week is Buddy Week!! Bring a friend to class. If your Buddy signs up for the $20 for 2 Week trial, you get a chance to win a set of P2 Gear!! Only Black Belts are allowed to buy this type of gear and it comes in different colors. (Keep in mind that this gear CANNOT be worn at testings, tournaments, or camps and does not replace your regular Red TA gear. It's somthing you can wear in class instead of your TA gear.)

    We are moving Fight Night up 1/2 hour for both schools. The Open Floor just hasn't had the attendance to warrant a full hour, and we'd like to have more people show up to Fight Night.

    Both are FULL UNIFORM.

    We need all students to be signed up no later than Thursday of this week.

    The March Regional Tournament is this Saturday, March 19th. It is being hosted by Charlotte Taekwondo America and held at East Mecklenburg High School Gym (direction links below). Accomodations are by Holiday Inn Express - Matthews (direction links below).

    Both the Roanoke and Blacksburg schools will be CLOSED on both Friday (March 18th) and Saturday (March 19th) for the tournament. There WILL still be Cardio in Blacksburg on Saturday.

    We will be holding a Yard Sale this Saturday, March 5th in Blacksburg from 7am to 1pm. We need donated items and volunteers!
    In addition to the Yard Sale, we will be holding a Raffle and are in need of donated Raffle Items (baskets or bundles).
    We will also be at the Kroger on South Main from 8am to 6pm selling raffle tickets and directing people to the Yard Sale. We need volunteers for that as well.

    Classes will be held as scheduled during the Yard Sale.

Please wear your Full Uniform, but also bring a change fo clothes - we are having a Pot-Luck immediately aftewards (sign-up sheets available at both schools). Since we'll also have their gym available, we'll be playing dodge-ball, as well.

    We have a new schedule in Blacksburg that is already in effect. Our Tuesday/Thursday 6-7PM class is now a Family Class.

    The 5PM Friday Class will now start at 4:30PM and is ONLY for Brown Belt Juniors and up.

    The 9AM Kids Class in Blacksburg has been removed.

    February Belt Testing will be this weekend, 02/04 and 02/05.
    On Friday, Feb. 04 - White through Senior Orange Belts will test at their TKD Schools at 6PM.
    On Saturday, Feb. 05 - Testing will be held at Kipps Elementary in Blacksburg (see link below for directions) beginning at 9AM. All black belts MUST attend and need to be there by 8:30AM.

    Green through Senior Blue Belts will test at 9AM.

    Brown through Black Belts will test at 10:30AM.

    We are holding a Demo at the New River Valley Regal Cinemas on both Saturday and Sunday from 12:30pm - 5:30pm on both days. We'd like as many people to come out to help as possible, Mr. Griffin has sign up sheets for both days (divided into hour blocks). Roanoke students are welcome to come. If you come out to take part in the Demo, please be sure to wear your white uniform (clean and pressed, with all patches, please don't wear a full set of clothes underneath and be sure to look neat and clean).

    We are having a Buddy Day in each school this week. Roanoke's is on Thursday, Blacksburg's is on Friday (during the "Open Floor" at 5:30PM).     Lost & Found items will be set out to be claimed. Any clothing NOT claimed or removed from the dressing rooms by DECEMBER 27th will be donated to the Goodwill.

    Mr. Griffin will have the remaining items set out in Blacksburg on Sunday, December 26th at 2PM for you to come by and see if anything is yours or your child's.

    We have secured a group rate for the Disney Parks the week of the January National Tournament. Below you will find the breakdown for a group of 4 based on 3 meals (per day) and the Park Hopper tickets:

  • Blacksburg Classes As Scheduled Monday (12/13) and Tuesday (12/14)

    We have decided to have classes in Blacksburg as regularly scheduled for Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th. Please check the regular schedule for your child's (or your) class to attend. Do not bring your child to the next rank up class assuming they passed, please. The classes we are going to be having are going to be Kick Review, Form Review, Sparring and Games. We will not be teaching new forms in these classes. They are going to be meant for fun and review. If this proves to be a good format we may continue with this every testing cycle. Do not ask for testing results during these classes, please. Also - Roanoke Students are welcome to come as well!

    In an effort to have award ceremonies without so much parking drama I am still trying to find an off site location for such. Therefore, I want to delay the ceremonies by one day each. Roanoke on Tuesday and Blacksburg on Wednesday. This will also give us the chance to get the certificates as well and hand them out with belts like we used to.

    Roanoke - Tues. 14th 6pm Full Uniform - At the Roanoke TKD School

    Blacksburg - Wed. 15th 6pm Full Uniform - At Blacksburg Presbyterian Church (we will have a Potluck afterward, so bring a dish to share! Also, a change of clothes so that you do not get stains on your uniform.)

Please DO NOT wear your TKD Uniform, instead wear your Halloween Costume (Instructors MUST wear a costume). We will not have any classes for either school that day.

  • IMPORTANT Parking Information

    Blacksburg

    Please DO NOT park on the other side of the parking lot - it is for customers of that building ONLY (Mr. Frith's Law Office and Mr. Smith's Acupuncture office) and they will be towing. Also, please refrain from parking at Companion Animal Clinic during their business hours (which includes Saturdays). We know that parking can, at times, be an issue and we are working to find a solution.

    Roanoke

    Abbott's Taekwondo must use its own lot for parking. The hair salon next door, Blades does not hesitate to tow your car. Even when they are closed, they tow. They have a towing service that monitors the lot 24 hours a day. Let me say it again, "Don't park there…ever…not even for a second." The drycleaner next door has never said anything to us about overflow parking. He is a very nice man. Take him all your dry cleaning, we like him.

    We are holding another Tournament Prep this Saturday, Sept. 11th, 2010 - so if you missed the last one, come out to this one! It will be held at Kipps Elementary in Blacksburg (see directions below.) Please be sure to bring your gear, some water and some snacks. Wear clothing to workout in, but DO NOT wear your full uniform, just bring your belt. We would like all belt levels be there at 9am and attend the whole session. Even if you are not planning on going to the National Tournament in September, please come to help your fellow classmates get prepared. All instructors are REQUIRED to attend, unless excused by Mr. Abbott.
    There will be NO Taekwondo Classes at either Blacksburg or Roanoke.

  • Roanoke Fight Night this Friday, Sept. 10, 2010

    This Friday night in Roanoke, Mr. Abbott will be running Fight Night. He would like as many Black Belt men to attend as possible. Andrew Bazak is going for National Testing and could use our help in getting ready. This is the last Fight Night before Nationals, so make it count!

  • Awards Ceremonies

    We will be holding our Awards Ceremonies on Monday, August 16th at 6:30PM for Roanoke at the Roanoke TKD school, and on Tuesday, August 17th at 6:30PM for Blacksburg at the Blacksburg TKD school. Please be in full white uniform. We would like to have a Potluck right after both, so bring a dish or two as well as a change of clothes (so that you can keep your uniform looking nice). You may also bring lawn chairs to sit on, but please make sure that they have the rubber/plastic covers over the feet so that they do not dig holes in the floor.

  • Steppin Out Demo was AWESOME!

    The Demo at Steppin Out on Saturday was Awesome! Thanks to everyone who showed up to participate or support our students! We have some great pictuers and videos which we will have online ASAP. The Demo Team's choreographed forms and everyone's individual forms looked great and showed how hard you've all been working. Once again, you've all proven why we ARE Team Awesome and why Abbott's TKD is the best Martial Arts Program in Blacksburg and Roanoke!

  • Steppin Out Demo This Saturday, Aug 7th

    We will be doing a Demo at Steppin Out again this year and we would like everyone to be able to participate! Our Demo Team has been working hard on some choreographed forms and fight scenes and they would like everyone to join them. You can do your form (or an old one that you like) and break a lot of wood! We had a great time last year!

    We will be on the Community Stage (located on the corner of Roanoke Street and Main, right up from 7-11) and our timeslot is at 12PM(Noon) to 1PM, so if you want to participate, please show up by 11:45AM. Also, to participate, you must wear your full uniform. (If you don't want to participate in the Demo, please still come out to support your classmates!)

    We will be having a Multi-Family Yard Sale at the Blacksburg Tae Kwon Do School on Saturday, July 24, 2010 - from 6AM until everything is gone! All proceeds go to the 2010 Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk for the Cure Team. We raised a lot of donations for them last year, lets see if we can do the same (or better!) this year! If you have any items you would like to donate, please bring them to the TKD school by Friday, July 23, 2010.

    We are holding the Award Ceremony for Roanoke on Tuesday, June 15th, 2010 at the Roanoke TKD School at 6PM. Please wear your FULL UNIFORM. We will be going to CiCi's afterwards, so bring a change of clothes if you plan to join us.
    The Blacksburg Award Ceremony will be on Wednesday, June 16th, 2010 at the Blacksburg TKD School at 6:30PM, wear your FULL UNIFORM (bring a change of clothes if you plan to stay for the potluck.) There will be a Potluck downstairs after the ceremony, so please bring a dish of something awesome to share.

We are planning to go to Texas Roadhouse afterwards, so you may want to bring a change of clothes. Also, please email Mr. Abbott before Tuesday if you are planning to go to Texas Roadhouse so that we can get an approximate head count to them ahead of time. There are NO TKD Classes at either school this day.

    Our March Regional Tournament This Weekend - March 26th and 27th in Raleigh, NC. IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO SIGN UP! We want as many people as possible to be able to attend. Also, the deadline for the T-Shirt pre-order has passed, so if you want a shirt, they will be available for purchase at the tournament. Please note that the schools (Roanoke and Blacksburg) will be closed both days for the tournament.
